, / 281 0

Viral gastroenteritis which is commonly referred to as stomach flu is an intestinal infection that is usually caused by a wide range of viruses. Most people develop stomach flu after eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. Sometimes, this condition may also occur as a result of coming into contact with an infected person.

Unlike other stomach infections, stomach flu rarely causes stomach problems. Leading symptoms of this influenza include sore throats general aches and pains, vomiting, and a runny nose. There is no specific treatment for stomach flu, and the condition may disappear after approximately ten days without medication. Here are some of the remedies to help you get through it.

Drinks a Lot of Fluids

The most significant danger from stomach flu is dehydration. This mostly occurs through the frequent vomiting and diarrhea. Therefore, the essential thing that you can do to keep your body hydrated is to drink a lot of fluids. However, not just any liquid will help you.

Water is the most recommended fluid, but you can complement it with some sports drinks to replace the lost electrolytes. Try to avoid milk since it may only make the problem worse. You should also avoid drinks that have a lot of caffeine or acid such as orange juice which can cause stomach problems.

Get Plenty of Rest

When you have gastroenteritis, your body needs a lot of rest to try and fight off the infection. Make sure that you get plenty of sleep and cut down the amount of activity that you normally do during your regular day. This means that you should be resting on your couch if you are not in bed. Your body will be working hard to contain the infection while you are resting and repairing the cellular damage that has already occurred.

Stick to the BRAT Diet

You may be confused on what to feed on when you are suffering from stomach flu. Well, the first thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to avoid solid foods as much as possible. Do not force yourself to consume food if you are feeling nauseous. The famous BRAT diet represents bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. So, why should you stick to these foods? The idea is that all of them are easy on your stomach and will also help you contain diarrhea.

Avoid Over-the-Counter Medications

With stomach flu, time is the best medicine. Don’t be tempted to a pharmacy and order the over-the-counter drugs since they rarely help. In fact, some of these medications may worsen the condition. Don’t be stressed over the vomiting and diarrhea since it’s the body’s unique way of fighting the infection. Do not interfere with this process at all. The only thing you should do is make sure that your body is hydrated.
